Justin Maurici, Massapequa Fire Department
On October 1st, I will be participating in the 3rd Annual National Stair Climb for Fallen Firefighters by climbing 2,200 steps, the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center, in full firefighter bunker gear. I'm participating in this event along with my fellow firefighters from the MFD to honor the 343 firefighters killed on 9/11. Unfortunately, the horrible events of that day are still being felt by hundreds of first responders who are now suffering from 9/11 related illnesses. To date, 159 FDNY Members have lost their lives due to illnesses related to their work in the World Trade Center rescue and recovery efforts.
I will be climbing in memory of Massapequa Firefighter James Kennelly who was among the thousands of heroes who helped in the recovery efforts after 9/11. FF Kennelly was exposed to the toxins at Ground Zero while giving up countless hours of his time as a volunteer firefighter. James Kennelly tragically passed away from 9/11 related cancer in June 2017 at 37 years old.
I ask that you please join me by participating in this event or by donating to this great cause.
